Momma's Night Out at Elm Grove Art

When I started my blog, I was hoping it would be a great way to connect with other moms online, to share our stories and talk about the ups and downs of motherhood. I had no idea I would meet so many amazing moms through the blog that would turn in to real-life friends.

On Saturday, I was able to spend the night out with a whole room of my blog-friends turned real-life friends at Elm Grove Art's Momma's Night Out. It was such a great night of connecting with other Milwaukee moms over a Pinterest craft and a few glasses of wine.

I hosted the event along with Keila from Mommy in Milwaukee and Amber from Milwaukee by Storm, and we were joined by a group of other local moms. Our craft for the night was painting a set of Christmas mason jar candle holders. I definitely do not consider myself to be an artistic person, so it was so great to paint with everyone else and be inspired by their ideas.

Keila, me, and Amber.

While we were working on the mason jars, everyone chatted and got to know each other over a few drinks. It was such a great, relaxing night out. I always really enjoy art projects when I complete them, but I rarely have the motivation to organize all the supplies I need and then clean up after it. So, I totally love when someone else is willing to do it for me.

I absolutely love the way my finished mason jars looked. I put them right on my mantle, where they will stay until sometime in January. Now, I can't wait to get our tree and the rest of our Christmas decorations up!

Thanks so much to Katy and Danielle from Elm Grove Art for organizing this great event for local moms. They'll be hosting more Momma's Nights Out in the future, so I hope to see you there!

Friday Favorites {18}

FRRRIIIIIYYYAAAAYYYYYY!!

Hey there, everyone. It's been a few weeks since I've shared some of my weekly favorites. I've had a bunch I've been saving for you. Can you handle the excitement? Get ready.

We have a super busy weekend ahead of us. In addition to a few things listed below, we're also taking our family photos for our Christmas cards, and expecting our first snow fall on Saturday! I'm actually really looking forward to the snow. Callum definitely doesn't remember what snow is like, and I think he's going to have a blast playing in it. I'm sure I'll be sick of the snow by December 26, but I'll try to enjoy it for as long as I can. (Follow along on our weekend adventures on Snapchat: meganjoyo.)

Alright, without further ado, here a few things I'm loving this week.

1. On Saturday night, I'm hosting a Momma's Night Out at Elm Grove Art along with Keila (Mommy in Milwaukee) and Amber (Milwaukee by Storm). It's going to be an awesome night of wine, Pinterest, and meeting other moms in Milwaukee. I'm so excited to connect with some amazing women, and have a glass of wine or two. There are still a few tickets left, and we'd love to have you join us!

2. These laundry hacks from Whats Up Moms are genius! I especially love the one about using a dry erase marker to write down on your washer the items that don't need to go in to the dryer. I always forget and end up drying things I meant to hang dry.

3. Earlier this week, I was sent a Sweet Dreams Cool Mist Humidifier to test out. It could not have come at a better time. Callum has been super stuffy lately, and we've been running his current humidifier none stop. But, I've got to say, this humidifier is such an upgrade from his current one. This one has a spot to put in Vicks Scents Pads (to really help with the colds), has an automatic shut off, and, probably my favorite, a projector that lights up three different themes (safari, sea, or stars) on your little one's wall.

Callum is obsessed with the projector. We leave it on for him at night, and he can watch the different pictures before he falls asleep. Plus, it is getting harder and harder to get him to sit still for diaper changes. But, if he can watch safari animals above his head, he is totally occupied. If you are looking for a new humidifier (which I'm sure everyone is this time of year), be sure to pick up the Sweet Dreams Cool Mist Humidifier.

Quick note: I did receive this humidifier free for testing, but all opinions are my own.

4. In my latest post on MKE Moms Blog, I shared some ideas on how to teach your kids about gratitude. Callum has got it so good. He's the first born, and the first grandchild on both sides. This kid wants for nothing (except for maybe an extra hour before bed). Anyways, how can I be sure he appreciates everything he's got? Check out my blog post for some ideas I discovered from other moms.

5. I hope this last favorite will give you a good laugh. I just had to share this video I saw a friend post on Facebook. This sweet dad recorded his entire Vegas vacation on his GoPro, but it was facing the wrong way. It's hilarious. He was so clueless. Definitely check it out.

If you're looking for something to do this weekend in Milwaukee, here are a few things going on in our wonderful city.

  • The Milwaukee Holiday Parade on Saturday at 9:30 AM
  • The commissioning of the USS Milwaukee at the Lakefront on Saturday
  • Lil' Kickers Soccer Open House on Saturday and Sunday (for kids ages 18 months - 9 years old)
  • Gingerbread Land opens at the Mitchell Park Domes on Saturday
Have a good weekend, everybody!

Milwaukee Trainfest

Callum has always been obsessed with things that go: cars, airplanes, construction vehicles, and, especially, trains. He could seriously watch them all day long if we let him, and I am always amazed with how long he can play with a train table.

So, when we found out Trainfest was happening this past weekend, we knew it was something we absolutely had to make time for. Trainfest, which happens at State Fair Park each year, is the largest operating model railroad show. In addition to all the model railroads at Trainfest, there is also a huge kids' activity zone.

When we walked in, Callum was completely mesmerized. He just wanted to stop and watch everything. So, that's what we did. I was really nervous about him wanting to touch all of the model railroads and breaking something that costs as much as my car, but he seemed to totally understand that the model railroads were just for looking at. There were even a few models that included buttons he could push to do things like open doors and turn on lights. Pro tip: If you go next year, bring a step-stool for your kid to stand on. We saw so many other families with them, and it was such a good idea! Matt's arms would've been a lot less tired.

The Kids' Activity Zone was way in the back of the Expo Center. It took us quite some time to make our way back there (and even longer to make out way out), but Callum definitely did not mind. He was too busy looking at all of the train layouts on the way there. The Kid's Zone was absolutely amazing! If we would've had an issue with Callum wanting to touch all the trains, we would've just beelined it right to the kids' area.

There was a large train for kids to ride, a ton of train tables, a train-themed music show and story time, tracks where kids could race trains, and even a make 'n take table where kids could make their own model railroad building. Even if your kids aren't train-obssesed, they'll still enjoy all of the different activities. I mean, who doesn't love a train ride?

Around lunch time, Matt and I were just sitting by the train tables watching Callum play. He was totally zoned in and focused. He could've played for hours. Seriously. Matt and I were joking around about leaving and coming back later. He would've had no idea. Since it was getting close to nap time, we had to laugh at all the kids having meltdowns as their parents dragged them away from the train tables. Being tired and told "no" does not bode well for kids.

After probably 45 minutes of playing, we had to pry Callum away from the tables. We were anticipating being those parents dragging their screaming kid away, but, thankfully, Callum left peacefully.

In hindsight, I wish we would've stayed for a few more hours. We were planning on getting Callum home for his nap, but he was too wound up from all the trains to sleep. I know Callum could've easily spent the rest of the day there. He had the time of his life and hasn't stopped talking about Trainfest since we left.

Next year, we will for sure be back. Thanks, Trainfest, for such a fun day!

Four Holiday Gifts Guide: Want

This December, Callum will be celebrating his third Christmas ever. I've always loved Christmas, but since he's been born, it's just turned into such a magical time of year. It's been so fun watching it through his eyes.

But, I do have a confession to make.

The last two years, I went way overboard on the gifts. Like way overboard. I was so excited to give him all these fun things, and I wanted to make Christmas morning extra special, but he would've been happy with just a couple of presents. I realized I needed to stop myself now, before he gets older and starts to expect an insane amount of gifts.

So, when my friend and neighbor, Alyson, told me about how she buys gifts for her kids, I knew it was something I totally wanted to incorporate into our Christmas. Alyson and her family have always gone by the 4 Gifts rule. 4 Gifts is all about cutting down on gifting and giving gifts that someone truly wants or needs. There are four categories (need, want, wear, read) and you buy something from each category.

Now comes the fun part, I've hooked up with ten other bloggers to give you the 4 Gifts Christmas blog series. Each Thursday for the next four weeks, I'll be sharing my favorite things for my family under each of the four categories. Hopefully our lists will help take some of the guess work out of Christmas shopping for you. (And give Matt a few ideas on what to get me!)

Goals for my 29th year

Last week, I turned the big 29. As birthdays usually go when you get older, it was a lovely day where I received lots of phone calls and texts from close friends and family, read through a ton of Facebook messages from people I haven't seen in years, and was treated to a delicious dinner out with my boys. It was perfect.

One-year-old me with my Dad.

That evening, I was reflecting with Matt on what a great year my 28th was: I started blogging more and joined the MKE Moms Blog contributor team, we celebrated and stood up in Matt's sister's wedding, we adopted our second pup, George, and, probably the most life-changing for me, I transitioned from a full-time working mom to a part-time one (and threw a job change in there). I already know there are great things on the horizon for the final year of my 20s: more weddings of people I love dearly, fun trips, and just watching Callum grow and learn new things every day.

Still, there were a few things I would've changed about last year. So, to ensure a great year ahead, here are a couple areas I'd like to work on personally over the next 365 days.

1. Want less.

Whether it's a new sweater, a larger house, or just a change of circumstance, I'd like to work on wanting less. I think we're all guilty of just wishing we had something bigger and better. Now, I'm not talking about dreams and goals, those are good motivators and tend to have positive effects. I'm talking about those destructive wants. The wants you don't need. The ones that can become toxic and make you feel less than. It's so silly to waste my energy on what I don't have, when what I do have is greater than I could've ever imagined.

2. Slow down.

I think this is going to be especially important over these next few months of holiday madness. This next year, I'd like to make it more of a priority of just being in the now. The dishes can wait five minutes while I sit and enjoy conversation with Matt. I can give myself 30 minutes to enjoy a book during Callum's nap, instead of stressing about getting some work done. I think a less-rushed verison of myself will be a happier one.

3. Eat less sweets.

Brought to you by this year's Halloween candy.

Seriously. I have a been a fun-sized candy bar eating machine. Sweets have always been my downfall. I can easily pass on a bag of chips, but offer me a piece of cake and I won't refuse. I can always feel a change in my body when I cut back on sugar, It's always a good change. I feel better. I sleep better. I have more energy. It's just always a struggle to remind myself of that.

4. Stop feeling guilty about making time for myself.

Whenever I do something just for me, I often end up feeling guilty about the time I'm taking for myself. No one is making me feel bad about this. In fact, Matt encourages me take the time to refresh and re-energize, but I still wind up feeling bad about it. I need to do a better job of enjoying my me-time. After all, taking care of myself will make me a better mom and wife, and make me happier all around.

So, bring it on, 29! I can't wait to see what the next year holds.

Our Toddler Halloween

This Halloween was, by far, the best one yet with Callum. He is finally able to (sort of) get what Halloween and trick or treating is, and it's so fun watching him trying to make sense of it all. I still don't think he completely understands it, but he is able walk his cute little legs door-to-door and say the sweetest little "trick or treat."

Callum as a candy corn in 2013 and Batman in 2014.

Last year, I spray painted a plastic push car that I found at a thrift store for Callum's Batman costume.  I figured he wouldn't want to walk much, being just over a year old, and that this would be an ideal solution.

To paint the car, I just used several coats of black spray paint. Then, I printed a Batman logo I found on Google Images to create a stencil. I used my makeshift stencil to hand paint the logo on the front of the car. The car turned out way better than I expected, and I was so thrilled to use it on Halloween night.

The night of last year's trick or treating, Callum all-out refused to sit in his Batmobile. He was tired, wanted to be held, and cried when we'd put him the car. A happy kid overruled the cute costume, and we barely used the car. So, this year, I decided we'd reuse it. And, I am so glad we did.

Since we were reusing Callum's costume, I thought I'd go ahead and find some superhero costumes for Matt and I to go along with our Batman. I found our simple Robin and Wonder Woman costumes on Amazon, and thought they went perfectly with Batman.

Our family of superheroes so enjoyed our Halloween night trick or treating with friends. As soon as Callum realized saying "trick or treat" got him a piece a candy, he was more than willing to stroll up to the houses and get his treat. Our neighborhood association does a great job hosting our trick or treat. It's like one big neighborhood party. People have bonfires on their front lawn, host parties at their house, and hand out lots of beer and adult apple cider to the parents walking their kids around. Each house we went to, Callum got his candy and was ready to stay for the party. We had to keep reminding him that there was more candy to be had.

After about an hour of hiking around the neighborhood, Callum and the rest of the boys were about spent. So, our gang all headed, bellies full of Snickers bars and apple cider. It was such a great night. I'm already looking forward to next year!
